In “Songs of Our Grandparents,” the emphasis has fallen on reconstructing the musical world of Minnesota’s preceding generations. How should one sum up a whole state, from farm to woodlands, from Native Americans to recent immigrants, from imported folk songs to popular music? This embarrassment of musical riches has required VocalEssence and its leaders to devise two medleys to pay homage to the North Star State’s wealth of music. So many social and ethnic groups have been instrumental in the founding and development of the state that laying out a quintessential musical history could tire an audience. Minnesota’s musical heritage defies easy categories or glib summary. This album should be part of the musical library of everyone who’s ever lived here.įrom our Grandparents’ Songs to the North Star Hit Parade Melius Christiansen’s “Beautiful Savior.”Įven some of Minnesota’s more famous products are included with a salute to Hamm’s Beer (“From the Land of Sky Blue Waters”) and “The SPAM Song” (courtesy Monty Python). The 1800s are brought to life with songs of the state’s pioneers, like “Oleana,” “Hälsa dem där hemma” and “Die Lorelei.” Every person who sang a note in a college choir - in this state of famous college choirs - will join in singing F. In two medleys, sure to become Minnesota classics, we relive the music of the Merry Macs (“Sentimental Journey”), Judy Garland (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”), the Andrews Sisters (“Bei mir bist du Schoen”), Bob Dylan (“Blowin’ in the Wind”) and Prince (“Purple Rain”). Cloud, Duluth and Saint Paul, the voices of VocalEssence explored the contributions of composers from Dominick Argento to Stephen Paulus and Libby Larsen. With stops in Marshall, Luverne, Montevideo, St. In October and November 2011, the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers criss-crossed Minnesota via historic Highway 23 to share with the state’s citizens the music of its choral composers, its singer-songwriters and the songs being sung by the people who made Minnesota their home over the last 150 years. The first question you ask yourself after you hear this album is, “Why doesn’t every state have one of these?” The answer, of course, is that not every state has a visionary like Philip Brunelle, a group like the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and a populace that cares enough to vote for the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment that provided much of the support for the North Star Tour.
